WATERLOO — Ila Mae Chettinger, 96, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Friendship Village Retirement Center.
She was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Zimmerman, Minn., daughter of Samuel and Minnie Backer Emmons. She married Gerald “Chet” Chettinger on June 13, 1935, in Garnavillo. He died Oct. 27, 1992.
Mrs. Chettinger graduated from Lamont High School, received a bachelor’s degree in education from Upper Iowa University, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa. She worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing during World War II, taught all grades in country schools in Fayette and Clayton counties and taught third grade in Arlington in the 1950s and at Irving Elementary School, Waterloo, from 1968 to 1980. She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at Covenant Medical Center.
Survived by a son, Gerald LaVerne (Lois) of Cherokee; a daughter, Carol Gladys (Bob) Schamberger of Garland, Texas; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Ann Chettinger; two grandsons, Robert LaVerne and Bryon Schamberger; three brothers, Clarence, Cecil and James Emmons; and four sisters, Esther Burington, Helen Davis Jenkins, Birdie Cerson and Lizzie Vaprodt.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.
