CEDAR FALLS — Mary Joan Schmidt, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

She was born Nov. 17, 1928, in La Porte City, daughter of Albert James and Abbie Agnes Hasbrouch Close. She married Emil Henry Schmidt on June 10, 1947, in Niles, Mich.

Mrs. Schmidt graduated from Sacred Heart School and was a homemaker.

Survived by her husband; three daughters, Cheri (Gary) Monaghan of Waverly and Luann (Dewain) Benson and Lynette (Don) Dietz, both of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by five brothers; and six sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, crafting, crochet, collecting Boyds Bears and Seraphim Angels and playing cards.
