[Iowa State Reporter, Monday, March 29, 1882]

Mrs. Nancy Burroughs, wife of D.W. Burroughs, died at their residence last Saturday about noon. The disease which terminated in death was typhoid-pneumonia, and she had been sick only about a week.

Nancy Judd was born at Hamilton, Madison county, New York, May 4, 1807. Her father was a farmer, and her early life was spent among the familiar scenes of New York farm life. At the age of 14 she was converted to Christianity and became a member of the Baptist church. October 27, 1834, she was married to D.W. Burroughs.

Previously, August 28, 1828, Mr. Burroughs had entered the ministry and in that labor he contiinued for many years after. She was his earnest support and co-laborer in the varied duties of ministerial life and their biographies cannot be written separately. Their labors began in eastern New York. They next went to Vermont, then to New Hampshire and again to Vermont. From Vermont they went to Erie county, Pa., and then to Fort Wayne, Ind.

Before going to Erie county, Mr. Burroughs spent two years traveling as agent of the eastern New York anti-slavery society. Mrs. Burroughs was with him a large portion of the time and greatly assisted him in the labors of those troublesome times. This was in 1840 and 1841 and the anti-slavery agitation ran high.

They came to Waterloo April 28, 1857, and this place has been their home ever since. Mr. Burroughs frequently preached for the Baptist people in this city during the first years of his residence. In his labors, Mrs. Burroughs was always his assistant and in the best and highest sense a true wife and helpmeet. She took an active an earnest part in the temperance work until the infirmities of age prevented, and her labors were always the result of sincere conviction and Christian devotion.

The funeral took place at the residence on Monday afternoon. A number of friends were present. Rev. Garton conducted the services, preaching from the text "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." The remains were deposited in Fairview Cemetery.

The grief of father Burroughs is shared by all who know what an excellent life is cut off from time, but she left the impress of a holy character on scores of human hearts.

Whatever principles may guide a mortal being along the winding course of life, when, at last, the weary feet touch the silent stream, and pass to the shades of death, the hearts of dear ones are touched with gentle sorrow; but, when a holy life goes out on mortal shores, a righteous mantle falls on those who wait behind and hope of eternal years spans all the saddening clouds with promise of reunion and immortal bloom.
