Funeral Services Wednesday for Two of Three Victims of Gilbertville Collision

Widows of two of the three men killed in an accident near Raymond Saturday night were recovering at St. Francis Hospital Monday from accident injuries.

Mrs. Robert Federspiel, 22, and Mrs. Peter Welter, 49, both of Gilbertville, both were listed in fairly good condition by hospital officials.

Robert Federspiel, 28, Peter Welter, 65, and Arnold Peter Schmit, 52, also of Gilbertville were killed in the crash on Hwy. 297.

Schmit was attempting to repair a flat tire on his car when a car driven by Federspiel approached from the rear and struck him, crushing him between the two cars.

Arnold J. Schmit

Arnold J. Schmit was born on March 19, 1910, in Fox Township, the son of Valentine and Matilda Mangrich Schmit.

He married Genevieve Sondag on October 9, 1940, at Gilbertville.

He was a veteran of World war II, serving in the U. S. Army. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville; also of the Hold Name Society and of Nugent and Demuth post. No. 714 of the American Legion.

Surviving are his widow and six children; Mary Jean of 310 Oak Ave;, James, Janet, Steven, Roger and David, all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Schmit, 1513 W. 4th St; five brothers: Lawrence, Eugene and Cletus, all of near Jesup; Ervin of 201 E. Arlington St. Waterloo; Edwin of 1021 Columbia St., Waterloo; five sisters: Mrs. Marcella Sadler, Raymond; Mrs. Alfred Frost of Rt. 1, Jesup; Mrs. Joe Thome, Raymond; Mrs. Francis Kresser of Independence; and Sister Mary Thomas Aquainas of St. Paul.

Arnold's father was a former member of the Black Hawk County board of supervisors.

Arnold was preceded in death by one sister in infancy.

Funeral services for Arnold Schmit will be at 11 a.m Wednesdat at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. Rosary services will be Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 and 8 p.m. at the Oppold Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
