Donald C. Hoffman, 78, of Cedar Falls, died of cancer on Monday, October 6, 2008, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Health Center in Cedar Falls.

He was born January 15, 1930 in Cedar Falls, the son of George Frederick and Mae Marie (Cawelti) Hoffman.

Don married Donna Ferns on June 3, 1950 in Barnes City, Iowa. He was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI).

He served as a radio operator in the US Navy on the battleship USS Wisconsin during the Korean Conflict. He was an accountant with the WCF & N Railroad, a US Postal Service railroad mail clerk in both Sioux City and Waterloo, and later was a clerk at both the Waterloo and Evansdale Post Office, retiring with thirty years service in 1985.

Don was a member of the York Rite College, Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Iowa, and District Deputy Grand High Priest. He was also the Grand Master of the First Veil Royal Arch Masons and a member or the Vintage Auto group from the El Kahir Shrine. Don was Eminent Grand Treasurer of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa, Worshipful Master of Black Hawk Lodge #65, and was awarded the DeMolay Cross of Honor. He was a DeMolay Dad for Black Hawk Chapter Order of DeMolay, Worthy Patron with the Order of Eastern Star, and Watchman of Shepherds of the Madonna Shrine and Bethany Shrine. Don was also past president of the Cedar Valley Men’s Garden Club, and was a member of the City Slickers 4H Club, the Cedar Falls Exchange Club, the Black Hawk County Extension Board, Cedar Falls American Legion Post 237, and First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls.

Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, woodworking and singing in the Twin Town Barbershop Chorus. He and Donna hosted many foreign exchange students, and enjoyed traveling and spending time at their cabin in Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Cedar Falls; a son, David Hoffman, of Bloomington, Minnesota; two daughters, Debra Belz of Dike, Iowa and Dixie (Tom) Anderson of Greene, Iowa; four grandchildren: James, Luke, and Nick Anderson, and Matthew Belz, and two great grandchildren, Thomas and Aeryn Anderson.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Maurice and Glenn Hoffman.

Services will be 10:30 am Friday, October 10, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, with interment at Washington Chapel Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls. Military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and Cedar Falls American Legion Post 237. Visitation will be 4—7:00 pm Thursday, October 9, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 7:00 pm Masonic Service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Black Hawk Chapter Order of DeMolay or First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls.
