Services for Gerald W. Preece, 81, of New York City are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Battle Creek, Neb., with burial in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church under the direction of Home for Funerals, Norfolk, Neb.

Gerald "Jerry" Wade Preece of Battle Creek and New York City died peacefully Dec. 22, 2012, in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.

Jerry born Jan. 26, 1931, in Waterloo, son of Dr. Wade Owen Preece of Battle Creek and Waterloo, and Mary Agnes Molumby of Waukon.

Jerry attended and graduated from West Waterloo Public High School in 1949. He graduated from Notre Dame University. South Bend, Ind., in 1953 earning a bachelor’s of arts degree. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, primarily stationed in Germany.

He initially entered the journalism profession in California newspapers, but later served for 18 years as managing editor of the nationally recognized "Hotel and Travel" index.

Survived by a sister, Helene M. McCormack of Camarillo, Calif, and a brother, Tim Preece of Danville, Calif.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 5028, Hagerstown, MD 21741. Also expressions of sympathy may be made online to the family through the Home for Funerals of Norfolk.
