WATERLOO — Darlene LaVone Burt, 71, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of heart failure.

She was born Aug. 23, 1941, in Bear Creek, daughter of Raymond and Mitilda Marie Plummer Kauffman. She married Joel Burt on Nov. 24, 1962. He died Jan. 14, 1990.

Mrs. Burt graduated from Starmont High School, Strawberry Point, in 1959. She had worked as a pastries chef at the Meely Hotel and later was employed with Waterloo Community Schools, retiring as a teacher’s aide at Waterloo East High School.

Survived by three sons: Shawn and Kerry (Kim Griffith), both of Waterloo, and Kevin (Nicole) of Coralville; a daughter, Dawn (Jeff Hovey) Widmann of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren: Alexandria, Christian, Trinity, Delaney, Chloe, Phoebe, Sydney, Peyton, Aiden, Chase and Nico; a brother, Ronald (Leona) Kauffman of Bella Vista, Ark.; and a sister, Edna (Eugene) Hauschild of Manchester.

Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dawn Burt II.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, where visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.

Darlene enjoyed sewing and crafts. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
