Fred H. Hilger, was born June 6, 1903 in David City, Nebraska, the son of Joseph & Myrtle (Murphy) Hilger. He died Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly at the age of 99 years.

He married Lucille Close on September 10, 1924 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. They celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary in the year 2000. Lucille preceded him in death on September 28, 2000. Fred worked at John Deere & Company for many years. He farmed in Bremer County and worked at the Waverly Sale Barn, retiring in 1974.

Survivors include one son, Mick (Linda) Hilger of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Phyllis Napiecek of Maryville, Missouri, Sally (Stan) Chapin of Gravois Mills, Missouri and a granddaughter raised as a daughter, Kathy (Ron) Brown of Versailles, Missouri; 12 other grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Anthony “Bud” (Zatha) Hilger of Columbus, Nebraska.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife and parents; one daughter, Donna Noel McCarty; two sons-in-law, Virgil Napiecek and Ernest Noel; two granddaughters, four brothers, two sisters, and a grandson-in-law.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 1, 2002 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo.

A memorial fund will be established.
