WATERLOO - Gene F. Condon, 72, of 3211 W. Ninth St., died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000. at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

He was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Waterloo, son of Carl and Claire Kane Condon. He married Carmen Lukes on Nov. 27, 1948, in Protivin.

Mr. Condon was employed at John Deere as a machinist for 35 years, retiring in 1983, and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was past board president of UAW Local 838 from 1956 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1963, was appointed international representative for the UAW, was executive secretary of Black Hawk Union Council and was past Iowa state senator from 1964 to 1968.

He was a council member of the Waterloo City Council from 1959 to 1963 and had served on several boards such as the Black Hawk Mental Health, American Red Cross and Family Service League, just to name a few.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Kelly of Waconia, Minn., and Doug of Rogers, Minn.; two daughters, Debbie Broten of Waterloo and Robin Lukes of Edina, Minn.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Donald and Gerald, both of Waterloo; and a sister, Norma Reuter of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Bill and Dick; and a sister, Pat Craft.

Services were 9:30 a.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Catholic Workers House.
