Mr. Gates was born January 2, 1904, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and was educated in schools of Pierre. He then attended Muskingum College in Ohio and was graduated in 1929 from the law college of the University of South Dakota.

He first practiced law at Custer in that state and then at Rushville, Nebraska, coming to Waterloo in 1837 on the invitation of J. D. Liffring. The latter was a junior law partner of his grandfather, John C. Gates. Mr. Liffring died that same year.

Mr. Gates was married to Lola Jones in May of 1837, at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He was a member here of Christ Episcopal Church, its vestry for four terms, and was treasurer of the church six years.

He was appointed lay reader by the diocesan bishop and was a delegate on several occasions to the annual convocation of the diocese.

He was a member of Waterloo Elks lodge, Toastmasters Club, Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity, Black Hawk County Bar Association and a member of the county hospital board.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Nancy, now a junior nursing student at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing at Sioux City; a son, Robert John, in the U. S. Marine Corps stationed at the San Diego base; his mother, Mrs. John Howard Gates, Custer, South Dakota, and New York City; and a sister, Mrs. Frank K. Shuttleworth of New York City.

Gates Park was named for his grandfather, John Cook Gates who, with his bride, the former Adelia St. John, settled in Waterloo in 1863. The first John C. Gates carried on the practice of law in the firm of Alford and Gates and later the firm was Gates and Liffring.
