Matt Parrott was born in Schoharie County, New York, May 11, 1857, the son of William and Maria (Beck) Parrott. In this locality Matt Parrott acquired his early education and obtained his first newspaper experience on the Schoharie Patriot. In February, 1869, with J. J. Smart, he bought the Iowa State Reporter at Waterloo. For two terms, Mr. Parrott served on the city council of Waterloo, as mayor from 1877 to 1881, was elected state senator from this district in 1885, was chosen lieutenant-governor of Iowa in 1895, and was a candidate for governor in 1897. Mr. Parrott's death occurred on April 22, 1900.

On October 25, 1859, he was married to Miss Frank M. Field, youngest daughter of Isaac N. Field, of Davenport, Iowa. To them were born three sons, namely: William and James, now operating one of the largest blank book, job printing and advertising novelty establishments in the Middle West, under the firm name of Matt Parrott & Sons Company.

On the 25th of October, 1859, he was married at Davenport, to Miss Frank M. Fields, youngest daughter of Isaac N. Fields, and his wife who was at his bedside at the hour of his death, and three sons survive him. One child, a daughter, died in infancy. Three sons: William F., Louis G., and James S., are all living in Waterloo, and are conducting the business which under their father's able guidance they have succeeded in building up into one of the important industries of the city and of the state.

Besides his wife and children, Mr. Parrott leaves five sisters, and three brothers to mourn his death, he being the first of the large family to pass away. The sisters are: Mrs. Charlotte Vincent, of Chatham, New York; Mrs. John Maternagan, of Troy New York; Mrs. Charles Throop, of Schoharie, New York: Misses Maria and Tina Parrott of the same city: the brothers are Alfred Parrott, of Schoharie, New York; William Parrott, of Brooklyn. New York, and George Parrott of Owatonna, Minnesota.

Nearly all of the brothers and sisters have visited at Waterloo at different times and the two unmarried sisters have made their home here for several months at a time and have a large circle of friends and acquaintances in the city.

The funeral services will be held at Christ Church. Episcopal, Wednesday afternoon. April 25, at 2:30 o'clock. The funeral will be in charge of the Knights Templar, and the sermon will be delivered by Rev. E. E. Madeira of the church.
