Richard E. McCarty (1927-2006)

WATERLOO -Richard E. McCarty, 78, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

He was born April 26, 1927, in English Township, son of Nelson and Dona Schly McCarty. He married Pauline I. McVey Dec. 30, 1945, in Troy, Kan. She preceded him in death Oct. 8, 2004.

Mr. McCarty served in the U.S. Army during World War II overseas in Germany. He was employed by Hedfords and Hitchins Bros. in Waterloo for 35 years then worked at Shellsburg Cheese Factory, Shellsburg, Wis., until his retirement. Richard enjoyed flowers, woodworking and making toys for his grandchildren.

Survived by five sons: Larry (Linda) of Lake Villa, Ill., Mike (Sheila) of Dixon, Ill., Rick of Waterloo, Nelson (Linda) of Cedar Falls and Todd (Kathi) of Kenosha, Wis.; a daughter, Kaye McCarty of Waterloo; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Don of Waterloo; and a sister, Dorothy Ellenwood of Burlington.

Preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Pauline; and three sisters, Judy Montgomery, Susie Comstock and Patricia Larson.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, with burial in the Garden of Memories. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
