MICHAEL HENRY SMIT

Funeral services for Michael Henry Smit, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald "Red" Smit of 1006 Hillcrest, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, at the American Lutheran Church. Rev. John Jacklin officiated.

Smit was Chief of Police of Garwin, Iowa at the time of his death. Death was due to injuries incurred in a car accident while Smit was on duty early Sunday morning. He died at Iowa Methodist Hospital at Des Moines on Sunday afternoon.

He was born December 22, 1957 at Forrest City, the son of Gerald and Marilyn Swenson Smit. He graduated from La Porte City High School in May of 1976. He was also a graduate of the Hawkeye Tech Police Science school.

In addition to his parents he is survived by one brother, Timothy Allen, at home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Henry Smit of Clear Lake, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Melana Swenson of Clear Lake.

Pallbearers were Steve Boss, Robert Burkgren, Douglas Hanna, John Hanna, Robert Hanna and Bruce Kline. Burial was at Westview Cemetery. The Johannsen-Rossow-Dykeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial fund has been established.
