WATERLOO — Charles J. Gilbertson, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Manor Care Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Waterloo, son of John and Charlotte Yaggy Gilbertson. He married Mildred Heimbuck on Nov. 7, 1957, in Davenport. She died in 1984.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Gilbertson worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Waterloo for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Survived by a stepdaughter, Betty (Harold) Arnaman of Fort Madison; several stepgrandchildren; and a special friend, Darwin Foster.

Preceded in death by two stepsons, Gerald and LaVerne Heimbuck; and a stepdaughter, Joan Bailey.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, preceded by an hour of visitation, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military honors by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the U.S. Navy Honors Detail.
