WATERLOO - John Dale Heinz, 84, of Atlanta Georgia formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, February 22, 2007, at North Side Hospital.

He was born May 30, 1922, in Black Hawk County, son of John and Emma Weber Heinz. He attended O.L.V.A and East High School graduating June 6, 1941.

He married Mattie Pat Spurlin February 26, 1944 in West Memphis Arkansas. They met when both were stationed at NAS Memphis TN. Mattie was a WAVE yeoman (secretary).

While in high school he received flight training through the Civilian Pilot Training Program earning his private pilot license on December 14, 1940. (Incidentally during flight instruction he once received a check flight from the great pilot Johnny Livingston who was the inspiration for Richard Bachs novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull.) He was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy in 1942 designated a Naval Aviator in 1943 detached from active duty in 1947 then he was in sales with National Cash Register and worked at various auto dealers between 1948-1960. He was in aviation management and aircraft finance from 1960-1988. He then retired from Chase aircraft Finance Corp.

Survivors include his wife; four sons: John Dale Heinz Jr. of Green Valley, AZ, James Alan (Karen) Heinz of Atlanta, GA, Paul Joseph (Deborah) Heinz of Jupiter, FL, and Charles Edward (Connie) Heinz of Dallas TX; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Dave) Preszler of Farmington, UT; 11 grandchildren: Blake Heinz, Clayton Heinz, Heath Heinz, Ashley Heinz, Alison Stephens, Amy Heinz, Katie Preszler, Noah Preszler, Hannah Preszler, Laura Preszler and Cody Preszler.

Preceded by his parents; five sisters: Ruth Klein, Roberta (Robert) Daily, infant sisters: Isabelle, Irene, and Robina, and an infant brother, Joseph.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 1 at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to St. Edward Catholic Church.
