Death came to George Cook, a long time resident of this community, Monday evening at 7 o'clock at his home on Chestnut St. at the age of 76 years. He had thrice broken a thigh bone in a two and one-half year period and had sufficiently recovered from the last fracture which he suffered in January, to walk. About a month ago his health began to fail and last week his condition became critical. Death was attributed to complications of old age.

George W. Cook was the last surviving member of the family of six children of James and Mary Cook to whom he was born April 6, 1872 near Vinton in Benton County, Iowa.

He lived in the Vinton community until September 9, 1902, when he married Miss Mary Burrows of La Porte City and they began farming southwest of this city. In 1925 they retired from the farm and he operated a general store at Eagle Center for seven years before coming to La Porte City to reside in 1932.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Boyd Fox of Independence; four grandsons: Russell Fox, Lloyd Fox, Weldon Fox and Lee Fox all of Independence and two great grand-daughters, Vicky Jo and Ann Marie Fox.

Besides his parents and his brothers and sisters, one son, Roy Cook, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Oliver Jensen in charge.

Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Burr. The casket bearers were the four grandsons and two nephews, Floyd Burrows and Donald Burrows. Burial was made in West View Cemetery.
