Mason City, Iowa - James "Jim" Jerald Nielsen, 72, of Mason City, died Monday, November 12, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service for Jim will be held on Friday, November 16, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Reverend Emily Horrell officiating. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City.

James Jerald Nielsen, son of Carl and Lydia (Heinemann) Nielsen, was born January 28, 1940, in Waterloo. Jim attended Waterloo schools and graduated from the East High School in Waterloo in 1958. Following graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Army. Before being honorably discharged on April 30, 1963, he was united in marriage to Nancy Zubrod on November 26, 1961, in Waterloo. To this union, three children were born: James, Michelle and Anne.

Jim and his family lived in Charles City, working as a paint contractor. Years later, Jim worked as a sales agent with Prudential Insurance, retiring in 1995 and moving to Mason City in 2004, where they made their home.

Jim enjoyed collecting coins, gardening, fishing and being able to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to collect World War II memorabilia and enjoyed spending his time at auctions and collecting unique items along the way.

He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Mason City and the American Legion.

He will be missed by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Nielsen of Mason City; children, James (Shannon) Nielsen, Britt, Michelle (Mike) Bamrick, Garner, and Anne (Jeff) Eilertson, Mason City; grandchildren, Mark, Jonah, Faith and Eden Nielsen, Cole, Payton and Cade Bamrick, Sophia, Miya and Finn Eilertson; brothers, Don Nielsen, Inglewood, Calif., and Richard Nielsen, Waterloo; and sisters, Jackie (Vince) Steffen, Cedar Rapids, and Janice (Bob) Blake, Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene and Harold; and his sister, Bernice.
