Black Hawk County - The first Waterloo soldier killed in the Civil War was Lorraine Washburn, son of Levi Washburn, who came here in 1856 or 1857.

Lorraine Washburn was a private in Company i, Third Iowa Infantry, and enlisted at Waterloo on May 30, 1861. During the action at the Blue Mills Landing, Missouri, on September 17, 1861, he was wounded in the leg. He died the next day from the effects of this wound.

Washburn was but twenty years of age at this time. The residence from which he went forth to the was in now known as 173 Third Street West.

Born in Royalton, Vermont about 1841 the son of Levi and Lucia (Terry) Washburn. He enlisted in Company I, Third Iowa Vol. Infantry May 20, 1861. Was wounded through the leg in battle at Blue Mills Landing, Clay county, Missouri September 17, 1861 and died there the next day and is presumably buried along the road there.

He was the first soldier from Waterloo, Iowa to be killed in the war.
