LA PORTE CITY - Donald L. Runyan, 82, of La Porte City, died Tuesday morning, February 25, 2003, at ManorCare, Waterloo.

He was born September 19, 1920, in Spencer Grove, son of Raymond "Speed" and Louise Kaiser Runyan. He married Mariellyn Thune March 1, 1944, in La Porte City.

Mr. Runyan served as a lieutenant (jg) on an LCS during World War II in the Pacific Theater and in Okinawa. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette with a B. S. degree. While at UIU he played football for the Peacocks under the coaching of Doc Dorman. In addition, he attended UNI where he received an elementary teaching degree.

Don and his wife, Mariellyn, owned and operated Don's Briardale Grocery in La Porte City for 10 years before he became a teacher in the La Porte City School System, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, Odd Fellows, and was also a past president of the La Porte City School Board serving from 1950-1960.

Survived by his wife Mariellyn; a son, David (Sue) of Cresco; four daughters: Judy (Duane) Robinson of Earlville, Sharon (Jud) Anton of Jesup, Marleen (Tim) Darnell of Tipton and Debra (Donald) Huck of La Porte City; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wilbur "Huck" (Marge) Runyan of La Porte City and Dr. Ted (Dorothy) Runyan, formerly of Britt and now of Fort Collins, Colorado; a sister, Wilma (Jerry) Rossiter of Des Plaines, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Runyan of La Porte City.

Preceded in death by a brother, Rolland "Rollie" Runyan.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in West View Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion San Diego Post 207 and the VFW Normandy Post 3983. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Huisman Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Those who wish may direct memorials to the family or to the La Porte City Ambulance Fund.
