Pfc. Russell Halley Dies in Viet Nam

A 20 year old Waterloo serviceman, Pfc. Russell Louis Halley, 1123 Maynard St., who had only been in Viet Nam for two months, was killed in combat there on November 21.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Halley, 1746 Mitchell Ave., and the husband of Mrs. Marilyn Halley, 1123 Maynard St.

-Mortar Fire Fatal-

An Army officer notified members of the family, Pfc. Halley, a member of the 1st Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry, was killed in an armored personnel carrier near Saigon after the Viet Cong mortar fire hit the vehicle.

Halley had been home on leave in August and left for Viet Nam on August 14.

He was born September 11, 1946, in Waterloo, the son of Russell LeRoy and Venita Schaefer Halley. He had been a resident of Waterloo his entire life and was graduated from West High School in 1964.

He had been employed as a meat cutter in S & S Meats and later at Smitty's Supermarket at 916 La Porte Road, before being inducted into the service Nov. 4, 1965.

He married Le Swartz August 28, 1965, in Waterloo. His widow is a beautician in Chris' Beauty Salon in Cedar Falls. He was a member of the Immanual United Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his widow; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Halley; one brother, Robert Wayne, 12; three sisters: Mrs. Susan Lea Benzine of 3107 Falls Ave.; Mrs. Don Smith, 219½ 8th St., and Carol Jean Halley, 1746 Mitchell; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Halley, 525 Home Acres, Evansdale; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schaefer, 427 Edwards St.; and maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. John Thompson, Manchester.

A memorial will be set up in his memory. Chapel of Memories West will have charge pending arrival within the next 10 days.

The Waterloo Courier, Sunday, April 2, 1967, featured the presentation of the Bronze Star for heroism and Purple Heart for mortal wounds received in action by Pfc. Halley to Mrs. Russell L. Halley. The ceremony in honor of Pfc. Halley was conducted Friday afternoon at the National Guard Armory in Waterloo.
