Merle "Mike" Vietor was born March 11, 1924 in Ackley, Iowa, the son of Geseinus and Anna (Saadhoff) Vietor. He died Thursday, February 1, 2001 at his home, at 76 years of age.

He was a 1942 graduate of Ackley High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mike married Marie Elizabeth Welsh on September 17, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 28, 1982. He served with the U. S. Navy in the European Theatre during WW II and was a veteran of the D-Day landings. After the war, Mike served with the U.S. Coast Guard for several years, and later was a real estate agent for many years with Washington Realty Company in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 for many years.

He is survived by his daughter, Terry Vietor of Cedar Falls and his son, Dana Vietor of Independence, Iowa; four grandchildren, Austyn and Ashley Vietor, and Isaac and Rachel Johnson; a brother, Harris Vietor of Iowa Falls, Iowa and a sister, Cecil Flessa of Ackley.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife and parents, and two sisters, Hattie Fleschner and Mildred Metzger.

Memorial services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 5, 2001 at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Garden of Memories in Waterloo, where military committal rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. A memorial fund will be established at a later date.
