Mary C. Hames, age 73, of Gilbertville, died Friday, September 14, 2012 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

She was born May 27, 1939 in Gilbertville, daughter of John and Margaret Schommer Phillips. Mary graduated from Don Bosco High School with the first graduating class in 1957. She was united in marriage with John J. Hames on June 21, 1958 at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. He preceded her in death on May 12, 2001.

Mary was a day care provider in Gilbertville for many years. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish where she served on the bereavement committee and also visited parishioners living in nursing homes. Mary loved children and they were an important part of her life. Her house was home base for many young people in the community.

Survivors include three daughters: Jeanne (Tom) Moeller of Gilbertville, Joan (Tim) Joens, of Gilbertville, and Diane Smith (Tom Wiese) of Keystone, IA; a son, Chris (Shannon) Hames of Elk Run Heights; 9 grandchildren, Maggie, Ian, Melissa (Chip), Abby, Andrea, Sam, Kayla, Wyatt and Payge; 6 great grandchildren, Destiny, Justis, Serenity, Faith, Brandon and Zander; a sister, Marge Reuter of Gilbertville; 3 sisters-in-law, Liz Curran of Waterloo, Yvonne Phillips of Cedar Falls and Ida Phillips of Elk Run Heights; and an aunt, Sister Eleanor Holdgrafer of Aurora, IL.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; 8 brothers, Andrew, Roger, Leo, Jim, George, Gerald, John and Joseph Phillips; three sisters, Magdalen Kurtenbach, Theresa Klein and Dorothy Fischels.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Public visitation will be held from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, September 17 at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel in Waterloo where there will be a rosary recited at 4:00 p.m. and a parish scripture service held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the Church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
