Kent R. Holst of Traer died Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the age of 73 years.

He was born November 30, 1938 in Waterloo, IA, son of Ray and Edna Lorenzen Holst. He graduated from Traer High School in the Class of 1956. He continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames.

On June 6, 1959 he married Judy Wood at Traer Methodist Church. Kent and Judy then moved to southeast Utah where he operated a ferry across the Colorado River. In September of that year they returned to Traer and Kent continued his education at Iowa State University graduating with a degree in Ag Business. He then owned and operated Ray Holst Inc. John Deere, a third generation family business. In 1981 he became General Manager of Traer Municipal Utilities, serving Traer in that position for 29 years. He then became the Development Director for Iowa Stored Energy Project retiring in February of 2012. Kent was active in his school years with accomplishments including participating in the winning 4 X 4 relay team at the state track meet and also earning the honor of Eagle Scout.

He was extremely active in the Traer community where he served as Scout Master, Charter member of the Traer Jaycees, Traer Ambulance Service, and Traer Fire Department for 25 years, four of which as Assistant Chief. He also served on various community and state boards including Traer Municipal Utilities, member and past president of Traer Development Board, member and past president of Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities Board and was an active member of the Traer Golf Course.

Kent loved the outdoors and enjoyed walking with his dog, biking, golfing, hiking, camping, motor home trips, scuba diving, kayaking, skydiving, hang gliding, parachuting and white water rafting.

Kent is survived by his loving wife Judy, two daughters Carri Holst and Jared Hasselmann, their family Mackenzie and Hannah (Derrick Dengler) Pearson, Austin Edwards, Bryce and Olivia Hasselmann; Jodi and Dan Hillman, their family Bryce and Kodi Hillman, all of Traer; brother Dwain (Donna) Holst of Mt. View, CA and a sister Joleen (Roger) Edwards of New Boston, MO; four nephews: Garry and Grant Holst, Brian and Marc Harrington, their families and his beloved dog Copper.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Service: 3:00 PM Saturday, September 22, United Methodist Church 512 4th Street, Traer, IA 50675. Visitation Saturday an hour before the service.

Celebration of Life: Saturday, September 22, 4:30 PM, Traer Golf and Country Club, 1673 Hwy 63 Traer, IA 50675
