David H. Alfrey, 87, of Waterloo, died at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village on Sunday, September 9, 2012.

David Homer Alfrey was born May 3, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Elbert and Henrietta Biggs Alfrey.

He married Marian Stover on August 10, 1947 in Louisville, Nebraska; she died April 18, 2012. He graduated from high school in 1943 at Louisville, Nebraska; received his BA in 1949 and his Masters in 1963 both from the University of Nebraska and his Guidance Certificate from UNI in 1975. David began teaching at North Loup, Nebraska and Malvern, Iowa; taught physical education for 15 years in Beatrice, Nebraska; moved to Waterloo in 1968, taught industrial tech at Orange High School and then was an elementary guidance counselor in the Waterloo Community School District retiring in 1989.

He served with the 301st BU AAF in Europe during WWII. David was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, received the Mayor’s Volunteer Award twice. He volunteered for Golden Apple, Cedar Valley Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Waterloo Center for the Arts, Ambassador Club, Cedar Valley Arboretum, and Covenant Cancer Treatment Center.

David is survived by his son Gary (Amy) Alfrey of Waterloo; daughter Judy Pollock of Grand Prairie,Texas; five grandchildren: Tori, Melissa and David Pollock and Jennifer and Kayla Alfrey; sister Dora Lue Hrabik ofLouisville; sister Marian Johnson of Louisville, brother Elbert Alfrey of Lincoln, Nebraska; and brother Henry Alfrey of Papillion, NE.

He is preceded in death by sisters Beulah Ford and Elberta Hicks, brother Douglas, and son in law Stephen Pollock.
