Loras G. "Lug" Knebel, 69, of Elk Run Heights, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at his home. He was born March 2, 1938 in Waterloo, son of Ambrose and Marie Bakula Knebel.

He married Kathryn Loftus November 29, 1958 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Evansdale. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Knebel was employed for 36 years with John Deere retiring in 1995. He then began a career in trucking working for Clubine Trucking and Greenbelt Transport.

Mr. Knebel was a man of many skills having worked as a lumberjack and in construction work while being off work from John Deere.

Survivors include his wife; four sons: Steve of Waterloo, Ron (Julie) of Geneva, IL, Kevin (Tracy) of Davenport, and Craig (Lori) of Jesup, his favorite daughter Tammy of Urbandale; ten grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters: Angelas Pope and Monica Smith, both of Dunkerton, and Zita (Garry) Nolting of Waterloo; four brothers: his twin Jean (Karen) of Dunkerton, Charles (Sandy) of Russell, Nick (Pam) of Everett, WA and Jude of Dunkerton.

Preceded in death by his parents; a sister Bernadette Anne Knebel; and a brother Mike Knebel.

Mr. Knebel truly loved and cherished his grandchildren and they felt the same about him. He was respected and revered by all of his five children and he provided many valuable life lessons and support. Mr. Knebel was very effective at communicating using few words. He was married for 49 years to his devoted and loving wife Kay.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Raymond where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and Waterloo Amvets Post 19. Public visitation will be from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Bosco System.
