DIES fit AGE OF 73

Widow of Former City Engineer
Passes Away After Stroke
This Morning.

While preparing breakfast in her home this morning, Mrs. Sophia B. Newton, 72, 717 Fairview Avenue, widow of Martin L. Newton, former Waterloo city engineer, suffered a stroke which caused her death at 7:15 a. m. today.

The calls of Mrs. Newton summoned her daughter, Mrs. Ralph B. Slippy, wife of the city engineer, who with her husband resided with Mrs. Newton. The later had been in poor health the last few years but was seemingly no worse when she awoke early this morning to prepare breakfast for Mr. and Mrs. Slippy, as was her custom.

Mrs. Newton had resided in Black Hawk County since 1876, when she came with her parents from Freeport, Illinois, to live on a farm 10 miles southeast of Waterloo. She was a charter member of Lrya chapter Order of Eastern Star, La Porte City, but in recent years had affiliated with the Waterloo chapter. The deceased attended St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church.

Sophia Berry was born May 26, 1852, at Freeport, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. In 1876 she moved with her parents to the farm home near Waterloo and October 25, 1876, she was married to Martin L. Newton who was city engineer from 1893 to 1909. Ralph B. Slippy, present city engineer and son-in-law of Mrs. Newton, worked in the office of her husband as assistant city engineer. Mr. Newton preceded the deceased in death January 24, 1911.

Surviving besides Mrs. Slippy, the only child, are a sister, Mrs. Ezra S. Newton, Corona, California, and a nephew, Albert C. Newton, who lives on a farm near Waterloo.

Funeral arrangements await word from the sister in California.

MRS. SOPHIA B. NEWTON

Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia B. Newton, 73, longtime Black Hawk County resident and widow of Martin L. Newton, former Waterloo city engineer, will be from the home, 717 Fairview Avenue at 1:30 p. m. Sunday.

Dr. J. E. Johnson and Rev. S. V. Williams, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church will officiate. The remains will be taken to La Porte City for burial in Westview Cemetery.
