Clarence Ackerman, 84, of Waverly, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Waverly Health Center.

He was born January 2, 1923, in Waterloo, son of George and Ida Tegmier Ackerman.

He married Beradine Dungan on February 7, 1942, in Waterloo. She died May 7, 1995.

Mr. Ackerman entered the U.S. Army on February 8, 1943. On May 11, 1944 he was shipped to New Guinea as a rifleman and truck driver. On July 19 1944 he was severly wounded by a Japanese hand granade in his fox hole. His surviving fellow rifleman shot the enemy before Clarence could be killed. When well enough he was shipped to a hospital in Santa Fe New Mexico and discharged on October 2, 1945. He was employed with the Rath Packing Company Capital Tobacco and was warehouse foreman at Joens Wholesale until his retirement.

Survivors include: his long time companion and best friend Myrtle Moeller of Waverly; a son Richard (Kathy) of Denver; three daughters: Jane Ann Stoneburner of Lehigh, Janet (Wendell) Huffman of Crystal, Minn., and Mary Ann McCambridge of Coon Rapids, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and three sisters: Berdina Niemeyer and Gladys DeLong both of Dunkerton and Esther Hall of Independence.

Preceded in death by: his wife Bernadine two grandchildren, Tracy Huffman and Marshall Swanson, his parents and three brothers: Chester, Lester, and Dexter.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvet Post 19 and Evansdale Amvet Post 31. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and for an hour before services on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
