William L. Carleton Jr., 77, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.

He was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark., son of William and Nettie Behrans Butler Carleton.

He married Dorothy High on March 8, 1957, in Hernato, Miss. She died June 29, 1993.

Mr. Carleton was employed at John Deere in the maintenance department. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Survived by a son, Ronald of Waterloo; a grandchild; a brother, Tommie of Little Rock, Ark.; and a sister, Grace McGaughuey of Little Rock, Ark.

Preceded in death by three infant daughters: Deborah, Sharon and Tammie; three brothers, Vernon, Frank and Isaac; and a sister, Ruby.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service/West Ridgeway, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
