Dr. Donald Lee Hanson was born May 20, 1928 in Callender, Iowa, the son of George P. and Marietta Hanson.

He died Sunday, January 13, 2002, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at 73 years of age.

He married Barbara Higdon on June 6, 1954 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 13, 1973. Don served with the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean Conflict. He served in many capacities with several high schools and universities in Iowa and Missouri, and was the former Department Head of the School Administration Department at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1986. Don was a member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Don is survived by his children, Mia Hanson of Tampa, Florida and John Hanson (Sherry) of Bettendorf, Iowa; two granddaughters, Sara and Julia Hanson, both of Tampa, Florida; a brother, Ellis “Bud” Hanson of Burnsville, Minnesota; a sister, LaVon Wing of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Weber of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Eleanor of Pocahontas, Iowa, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents; his step-mother, Naomi Hanson and two brothers, John and Ken Hanson.

Graveside Committal Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, where military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49, 20th & Irving St., Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.
