Edward Hedges Nov. 12, 192? - Aug. 25, 2012

Edward “Bud” Hedges of Waterloo passed away of a massive heart attack at Allen emergency on Saturday. He was over 90 years of age. In the 1920s Ed was brought over on the orphan train and adopted by Margaret and Edward Hedges Sr.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a gunner’s mate on the USS Hailey 556D. After the war, Ed helped build the Alaskan Highway and worked for Boeing Aircraft, Seattle. When moving back to Waterloo in the 1950s, he owned several service stations, was a police officer for the Waterloo Police Department and worked for John Deere. He built stock cars and raced his car #7-0 at Tunis Speedway. Ed was an ace mechanic, an inventor and could fix anything. He loved auctions, country music, animals and birds. He was a generous-hearted man who helped everyone. Ed always lived his life his way.

Ed is survived by Wanda, his loving wife of 66 years; his faithful dog, Maverick; his three children, Dan (Wendy), Diana (Lyle Hoofnagle) and Dennis (Rebecca); grandchildren, Tami (Mike), Starri (Mike), Brandy, Tanya (Steve) and David (Jennifer); great-grandchildren, Jazmin (Jordan), Bailey, Tucker, Tyler, Hannah, Cody and Cheyenne; brother-in-law, Bob Welch; sisters-in-law, Maxine and Alice; several nieces and nephews, including Jim (Barb) Hamlyn, Lee and Robert Myers, Patty and Laura and several more.

Special thanks to the incredible Dr. Annie Kontos and her family. Also to Mike Roberts, Dr. Alan Cameron, John Russell, Forest (Janet), the good folks at Junie’s, Bob Mount, Renae and her crew at Logan Hy-Vee, George Cooley, Joe, Satch, the Allen home nursing staff, and many more.

Following Ed’s wishes, there was a private interment last Tuesday at Waterloo Cemetery.
Memorials and condolences may be directed to the family at 5135 Motor St., Edina, MN 55436. Or in lieu of memorials, please give a big tip to your waitress or waiter. Tell them it’s in honor of Ed!
