CEDAR FALLS- Mary E. Backens, 91, of Waterloo died Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at NewAldaya Lifescapes.

She was born April 13, 1921 in Cedar Falls, daughter of Fred A. and Vesta "Mina" (Corwin) Crane. She married Kenneth F. Backens on June 28, 1941 in Cedar Falls.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and was a homemaker throughout her adult life.

Survived by two sons, Donald (Chris) and Eric, both of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Crane of Cedar Falls and Terry Crane of Ankeny and one sister, Irene of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by one brother, Jim Crane; and one son, Kenny F. Backens.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service and also for one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
