CEDAR FALLS — Mildred “Millie” Tompkins, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the Western Home Communities Thalman Square in Cedar Falls.

She was born April 23, 1925, in Charles City, daughter of Otto and Julliette Farcy Michaelis. She married Theodore Tompkins Dec. 14, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died Aug. 2, 1994.

She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. Mrs. Tompkins was a telephone operator in Charles City and Waterloo with Northwestern Bell (Qwest) Telephone Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1981.

Survived by a daughter, Sandra K. Kessel of West Warwick, R.I.; two grandchildren, Kyle Kessel of Boston and Meagan Kessel of Providence, R.I.; a brother, Donald (Akemi) Michaelis of Dallas; and two sisters, Louise (Donald) McIntosh of Waterloo and Betty Colonnese of Mesa, Ariz.

Preceded in death by three brothers: George, Harry and James Michaelis.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with inurnment in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Public visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, and also an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, may be directed to the Western Home Communities Thalman Square and the Western Home Foundation in her name.
