WATERLOO — Sister Bernice Kurt RSM, 78, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Mercy Hallmar Care Center in Cedar Rapids of cancer.

She was born Nov. 9, 1933, in Bernard, daughter of John G. and Ella Moorman Kurt.

She attended St. Patrick School in Garryowen and graduated from Mount Mercy Academy in Cedar Rapids in 1952. She joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1950 and served 26 years in education, 14 years as a teacher in parochial schools in Ames, Decorah, Cedar Rapids and Fairfax, and served 12 years in administration as a teacher and principal at Our Lady of Grace School in Edina, Minn., and at St. Patrick’s in Fairfax. She was principal at All Saints in Cedar Rapids, St. Nicholas in Evansdale, and St. John’s in Waterloo. She received a master’s degree in elementary administration and theology from Loras College in Dubuque in 1972. She assisted with parish work at St. John’s, Mount Vernon, in 1984, studied pastoral ministry at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., and was a chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from 1985 to 1987, and at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids from 1987 to 2007, when she retired.

Survived by four brothers: Charles (Kit) and Earl (Louetta), all of Cascade, and Tom (Rita) and Pete (Mary Jane), all of Bernard; and four sisters: Sister Mary Kurt RSM of Cedar Rapids, Lois Donovan and Rita Martin, both of Bernard, and Jane (Lloyd) Steffen of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews, including Sister Linda Bechen RSM and other Sisters of Mercy.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Dorrance; and a sister, Germaine Bechen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Chapel of Mercy at Mount Mercy University, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Cedar Rapids. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Chapel of Mercy at Mount Mercy University, Cedar Rapids, with a 7 p.m. wake service. Teahen Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
