WATERLOO — Juanita McDermott, 54, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Waterloo, died Sept. 9, 2010, in Anchorage.

She was born Oct. 29, 1955, in Waterloo, daughter of Lawrence and Lenora McDermott.

She graduated from Waterloo East High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa. She then worked and taught at the University of Iowa for several years before moving to Colorado, where she pursued additional college studies in Denver, and later at Rush University, Chicago. In 1984 she moved to Anchorage, where she continued her nursing career as a unit manager of the newborn intensive care unit and neonatal nurse practitioner at Providence Hospital.

She is survived by her mother of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo.; a sister, Charlotte McDermott of Hot Sulphur Springs; a brother, David McDermott of Anchorage; a nephew, Scott (Cher) McDermott of Waterloo; a great-niece, Katelyn of Waterloo; and two great-nephews, Taylor and Cameron, both of Waterloo.

Shek was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Waterloo.
