CEDAR FALLS — Virginia Mae Newgard, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, July 6, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

She was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Folmer and Althea Kyhl Hansen. She married Robert Newgard on Aug. 24, 1950, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. He died Dec. 9, 2005.

Mrs. Newgard received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, was a music teacher for 30 years in the New Hartford School District and farmed with her husband for 34 years. After retiring, she was employed at the Cedar Falls Walmart for 15 years.

Survived by a son, James R. of Houston; a daughter, Kathy (Scott) Cessna of Cedar Falls; a daughter-in-law, Lola Newgard of Decatur, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Lorraine Hatkowski, Eric Newgard, Alison Newgard, Christine Hardigree, Matthew Cessna, Kimberly Cessna and Kyle Newgard; two great-grandchildren, William and Sarah Hatkowski; a brother, Thomas Hansen, of Portland, Ore.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Hansen of West Des Moines.

Preceded in death by a son, Charles; a brother, Homer Hansen; and a sister-in-law, Mary Kay Hansen.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church, NewAldaya Lifescapes or the Charles Newgard Memorial Scholarship Fund at Wartburg College, Waverly, in lieu of flowers.
