LA PORTE CITY — Pearl E. Mitchell, 88, of La Porte City, formerly of Evansdale, died Monday, July 2, 2012, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Ackley, daughter of Arend and Lena Harken Kannegieter. She married George Rops in 1942 and they were later divorced. She married Donald E. Mitchell on Dec. 1, 1950, in Blair, Neb. He died Nov. 17, 1995.

Mrs. Mitchell had managed a woman’s department at Sears and also had worked for Powers Manufacturing for eight years.

Survived by three sons: Lee (Linda) Rops of Northwood, Paul (Janet) Rops of Holmen, Wis., and Gary Mitchell of Nashville, Tenn.; three daughters: Roseann (Mike) Spooner of Waterloo, Karen Roberts of Bedford and Pam (Dan) Schmitz of La Porte City; 24 grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Angeline (Kenny) Palmer of Quasqueton; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Kannegieter.

Preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Larry Mitchell; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Cornelius “Bud” and Marvin Kannegieter.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City, with burial following a luncheon at the church in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at La Porte City Funeral Service and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
