[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, May 30, 2012]

Loretta Berneice Jans was born Aug. 12, 1923, to Bert Saltou and Alta Lee in Northwood. She was an only child. Loretta passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012.

Loretta was a graduate of Dike High School and planned to go to Gates College in Waterloo. However, she fell in love with Burdette Jans and married him on July 17, 1942, in Rolla, Mo. While Burdette was serving in the South Pacific, Loretta gave birth to their first child, Paulette. In 1945 Burdette returned from military service and he and Loretta began farming. In 1947, Loretta gave birth to their second daughter, Connie. For the next 20 years they farmed in Grundy and Black Hawk counties.

Burdette and Loretta made life changes — they moved into town and became realtors. Loretta sold real estate for the next 38 years representing Jans Realty, then Trapp Realtors. Real estate became a passion, and she was rewarded by attaining the Medallion Club status several times, the Iowa Association of Realtors Bronze and Silver Achievement Awards and a treasure chest of letters of appreciation from generations of clients.

Church life has always been a priority of Loretta’s, and the Mary Faith Circle has provided treasured friendships and meaningful purpose.

She will be forever remembered by her daughters, Paulette (Larry) Wood of Windsor Heights and Connie (Gery) Deaver of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Ross Wood of Des Moines, Steven Wood of Des Moines, Kristi (John) Uselding of Huxley and Kara (Paul) Chang of Cambridge, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren, Ashton Bellah of Des Moines, Claire and Addison Uselding of Huxley, and Chloe Change of Cambridge.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at Prairie Lakes Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Reinbeck Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Richardson Funeral Service, and also for one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Burdette E. and Loretta B. Jans Scholarship Fund at Hawkeye Community College.
