William E. Bill Praska, 81, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, from complications of multiple myeloma. He was born April 6, 1925 in New Hampton, Iowa, son of William P. and Lu Zipse Praska.

He married Helen M. Webb August 28, 1948 in New Hampton. Bill graduated from New Hampton High School and then from Gates College. He was employed in the purchasing dept. with John Deere for 38 years, retiring in May 1985. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII, participating in the occupation of Japan. He was trained as a radioman attached to the U.S. Marines amphibious assault unit. Bill was a member of the Waterloo American Legion Knights of Columbus and St. Edwards parish. He was an official for high school and college football and basketball from 1947 to 1997. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in the early 1990s. He also coached Optimist Boys Baseball for 10 years and was an avid sportsfan and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife; a son Gary (Carol Schultz) of Waterloo; three daughters: Susan (Mike) Cooper of Waterloo, Julie (Doug) Vancil of Albuquerque, NM, and Sandra (Don) Struebing of Indianola; four grandchildren: Mikayla and Morgan Struebing, Bryce and Kim Dengler; a great-grandson Isaak Dengler; and five step-grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Waterloo and Evansdale AMVETS Post 19 & 31. Public visitation will be from 4:00 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Columbus High School Athletics or Booster Club Cedar Valley Hospice or St. Edward Catholic Church.
