GILBERTVILLE — Michael J. “Mike” Schmitz, 87, of Gilbertville, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of cancer.

He was born April 21, 1925, in Black Hawk County, son of Michael and Anna Kettman Schmitz. He married Helen Mae Drahos on July 1, 1947, in Eagle Center. She died June 16, 1999.

Mr. Schmitz farmed in the Gilbertville area and also was a salesman for Vigortone Feed for 26 years.

Survived by two sons, Craig of La Porte City and Kent (Sue) of Jesup; five daughters: Linda (Ron) Thome of Raymond, Carol (Roger) Schuler of Peoria, Ariz., Vicki (Tom) Schmitz of Roland, Sherry (Danny) Schmitz of Waterloo and Rhonda (Bill) Bloes of Jesup; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard of Gilbertville; two sisters, Marcella Schmitz and Edna (Claude) LaFlamme, both of Waterloo; and a sister-in-law, Hattie Schmitz of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a great-grandson, Brandon Schmitz; two brothers, Roman and Harold; and two sisters, Gertrude Schares and Mildred Frost.

Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a time of sharing. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the Bosco System or Cedar Valley Hospice.
