EVANSDALE, IOWA — Roger Francis Meany, 90, of 1129 Brookside Ave., died at home Saturday, June 16, 2012.

He was born June 2, 1922, in rural Buchanan County, the son of Michael and Catherine Shannon Meany. He attended rural schools near Fairbank and graduated from eighth grade in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from August 1945 to January. 31, 1947. He served as a lineman with the 3160th Sig. Ser. Battalion in Germany. Before that, he worked on the farm. After service he worked at John Deere in Waterloo from 1947-1950. He then worked at Rath Packing Co. for more than 33 years, retiring in July 1984.

He married Iva Mae Crooks on June 1, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank. They lived in Waterloo and attended St. Mary's Church. He moved his family to Evansdale in October 1951 (after working on a farm for E.J. Houseman for a year) and has lived in the same place ever since. He was a charter member of St. Nicholas Church, Evansdale. He was one of the parish people who helped with the building of the rectory and Mercy Hall and helping whenever he was needed through the years. He was also a member of the Men's Group serving as an usher, Knights of Columbus and a member of the Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. He enjoyed his family and visiting with people and going to auctions.

Roger is survived by his wife; three sons, James (Edel) Meany of Kyle, Texas, Joseph (Joan) Meany of Waterloo and Eugene (Sherry) Meany of rural Clarksville; one daughter, Rosemary Meany of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gladys Dann in 2005 and Agnes Lumsden in 2007; and a brother, Owen, in 2007.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Queen of Peace Parish, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo, from 4 to 7 p.m. today, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary, and at the church for an hour before services Tuesday.

Those who wish may direct memorials to the Evansdale AMVETS, Allen Hospice or the Knights of Columbus.
