CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - John E. "Jack" Grieger, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center of Western Home Communities.

He was born July 4, 1924, in Waterloo, son of Edward J. and Opal Jenkins Grieger. He married Doris J. Eltjes on August 8, 1944, in Memphis, Tennessee. She died December 21, 2010.

Mr. Grieger served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, prior to the war and later became a federal meat inspector. In 1955 he opened Reece & Grieger Meats Inc., selling the business in 1980. He then worked for 15 years at the Gilbertville Locker.

He is survived by a son, David (Pam) of St. Peters, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Grieger of Waterloo; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; a nephew and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas K.; and a sister, Mercina Eastman.

Funeral services will be Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, preceded by an hour of visitation. There will be no viewing; his body was cremated, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum, Waterloo, at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Patrick Catholic Church in lieu of flowers.
