WATERLOO - James Michael Wardlow, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Waterloo, son of Harry R. and Ellen Nell Dunn Wardlow. On Aug. 22, 1953, he married Ramona Josephine Burke at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hanover Township, rural Waukon. She died Oct. 2, 2006.

Mr. Wardlow graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy in 1946, then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed for 46 years by the Illinois Central/Chicago Central Railroad as a car inspector. He also worked at the A&P Grocery Store, Martin Bros. Distributing and Takin Bros. Transfer and Storage. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 764 and The National Association of Retired Veterans and Railway Employees.

Survivors include five sons, Thomas (Susan) of Newton, Michael (Sarita) of Minnetonka, Minn., Patrick (Renee) of Waterloo, James (Adriana) of Boynton Beach, Fla., and William of Milwaukee; three daughters: Ellen Benson of Crystal Lake, Ill., Catherine (Gregory) Slick of La Porte City and Maureen (James) Rozen of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren, Joshua and Daniel Slick, Jessica and Alexander Benson, Amber (Mark) Ridder, John (Patrice), Christopher (Holly), Sarah, Kyle, David, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Erin, John and Alicia Rozen; five great-grandchildren, Cooper, Hayden, Violet, Dawson and Mack; a brother, Joe (Cindy); a sister, Mary Joanne Rosario; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Wardlow.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brandy; and a brother, Bill.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church (formerly St. Joseph's), with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Public visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Jim was a hard worker who provided for his family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Ramona, and their family, whom he loved very much. He also enjoyed the yearly 321st Signal Battalion Corps reunions, this last year being the 58th, and the monthly Railroad Retirement (Rails) meetings. His special friends include Doris, Rod and Julie.
