CEDAR FALLS — Dean L. Charlton, 82, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center, Waterloo, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in East Moline, Ill., son of Hugh and Grace Ames Charlton. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Schmitz on Dec. 29, 1954, in Dumont, Minn.

Mr. Charlton was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict and was employed by John Deere & Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Hagerman Baptist Church, where he was the youth leader and a Sunday school teacher. He coached city and church league softball for many years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Randy (Rita) of Chatfield, Minn., and Steven of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Debra (Bruce) Hayes of Dike, Diana (Matthew) Murphy of Altoona, Lori (Roger) Temp of Robbinsdale, Minn., and Pamela (William) Arndorfer of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Robert; and three sisters, Virginia Louise Stone, Mary Scarbrough and Dorothy Canakes.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hagerman Baptist Church, Waterloo, with private family burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial fund to be established at a later date.

Dean was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. He enjoyed woodworking, while living on the acreage with his family near Dike for 33 years.
