Velma H. Omer

Velma was born March 20, 1911, in Farragut, Iowa, the daughter of William and Jennie L. (Butts) Hansell. She died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

She grew up on a farm northwest of Tabor, Iowa. Velma graduated from Tabor High School and received a Bachelor's degree in Science and Elementary Education from Drake University and additional training in education from Drake, National Science Scholarship summer schools and college workshops.

On December 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Frederick Omer in Plattsburg, Missouri. He died Jun 18, 1999. Velma was a classroom teacher in Iowa Public Schools for 30 years and worked in guidance and social work for 17 years. She was employed in Polk County as a social worker and was Director of Social Work in Fremont County during World War II. She also worked in the Waterloo Public Schools from 1963 until her retirement in 1977 as a Home School Worker.

Velma is survived by her sister, Dorothy Laird of Algona, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Lloyd Gaylord of Indianapolis, Indiana, Stanley Hansell of Randolph, Iowa, Charles Hansell of Tabor, Iowa, Max Laird of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and step niece, Betty Nelson of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Willard and Chester Hansell; sisters, Nellie Gaylord and Opal Wall; niece, Betty Jeffries; and nephew, Gordon Gaylord.
