CHARLES M. KACHULIS

Charles M. Kachulis of Clive, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at his home, due to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

He was born June 14, 1945, in Waterloo to Barney and Elsie Kachulis.

He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1963 and received an Associates Degree in Electronics from Waterloo Technical School in 1965. He served on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War.

He married Ruth Ann Shriver on September 10, 1967 in West Des Moines. They were divorced in 1994.

He worked for Engineered Equipment and later for ALO Corporation of which he became owner in 1991, retiring in 2004. Chuck loved the outdoors, sailing, biking, trout fishing and organic gardening as well as traveling. He was a good friend to many, always had a desire to learn and was always eager to strike up a conversation.

Survived by three daughters, Carol Anderson (Sam) of Urbandale, IA, Emily Kachulis (Randy) of Cedar Falls, and Rachel Busch (Kevin) of Urbandale; three sisters, Karen Flann (Homer) of Alexandria, VA, Sarah Shirley of Covington, KY, and Jane Kachulis of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren; and a special companion, Elaine Appleby.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Falls Mennonite Church, with inurnment at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Richardson Funeral Home (266-3525).
