Oscar was born January 12, 1915, in rural Floyd County, Iowa, the son of Charles and Barbara (Kirsch) Hurd. He died Wednesday, November 03, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

On April 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Gladys M. Meyne at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was employed at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo during World War II and then was a plaster contractor, co-owning Hurd and Simmons.

Oscar is survived by his wife Gladys of Cedar Falls; daughters, JoAnn Chapman of Waterloo and Judy (Virgil) Kuhlmann of Readlyn; son, James O. Hurd of Waterloo; grandchildren, Todd and Scott Chapman, Joelle Strader, Brian Wallbaum and Kim Kerr; great grandchildren, Taylor Anne, Christian and Connor Chapman, Staci and Mara Strader and Alex and Cody Wallbaum; and sisters, Leora (Claire) Kepple and Katherine Schuknecht, both of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lester Hurd; and sister, Grace Hurd.
