Merle Elsie Aikey, 92, formerly of Cedar Falls, died on December 25, 2007 at the Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa.

Merle was born on June 15, 1915 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the oldest of eight children born to John and Elsie (Byers) McCarter. Merle attended school in Cedar Falls, and following her schooling, she stayed at home to help out with the younger children and housework.

On August 25, 1934, Merle was united in marriage to Gaylord Aikey in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The couple made their home in Cedar Falls, where they started Aikey Salvage yard in 1951. They ran the salvage yard together until they retired in 1972. Gaylord died on January 9, 1990, and Merle continued to live in her home in Cedar Falls until she became a resident of the Linden Place at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community on January 9, 2006 and then at the Denver Sunset Home in Denver in August of 2007.

Merle was a member of Trinity Bible Church in Cedar Falls. She enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and liked to go fishing with Gaylord, “Wherever he went, I went!” Merle would say.

Merle is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Richard) Smith of Denver, Iowa, Marlys (Wayne) Wersinger of Cedar Falls; two sons, Jim (Anne) Aikey of Cedar Falls and Gail (Geri) Aikey of Charles City; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Jim McCarter of Waterloo, and by two sisters, Alta Lydon of Oregon and Vera Lang of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Larry Aikey; one great-great granddaughter, Olivia Aikey; 3 brothers, Merlyn, John and Joe McCarter; and one sister, Eula.

Graveside services will be held at the Washington Chapel Cemetery in rural, Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday, December 28, 2007 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 am at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Bible Church in Cedar Falls.
