John Joseph Cox, 91, of College Station, Texas, and formerly of Waterloo, Arlington and Volga City, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, March 28, 2012.

John was born February 4, 1921, in Sperry Township (Volga City), Clayton County, the son of Frank and Florence (Feeney) Cox. He graduated from Volga High School in 1939 and attended Junior College, Elkader, and operated a gas station in Volga City for a period of time.

John married Helen Popchuck on July 11, 1941, and they moved to Waterloo, where he worked for the Carnation Co. and then with Rath Packing Co. On June 15, 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was a combat veteran, stationed in Munich and Windischeschenbach, Germany.

After the war, he resumed his job at Rath Packing in Waterloo. In 1951 John, Helen and their three daughters moved to Arlington, where John was a livestock buyer for Rath Packing until 1969, when they moved back to Waterloo where John was a car salesman for Burdette Buick.

John was an active community member in Arlington. He served for many years on the Arlington School Board and was an inaugural member and president of the Starmont School Board upon the consolidation of the Strawberry Point, Arlington and Lamont School Districts.

Upon retirement, John and Helen moved to State College, Pa., in 1987 to be near children (Susan and Eileen) and grandchildren. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1997 with daughter Susan and her husband, Fausto, who joined a physician practice there. After his wife, Helen, passed away in 2003, John moved to College Station in 2007 with Sue and Fausto and where daughter Eileen lives with her husband, Larry, a professor at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center.

John is survived by his three daughters, Eileen (husband Larry) Gamm of College Station, Diane Glass (husband Jeff Means) of Des Moines and Susan (husband Fausto) Avila; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Sara and Paul (Eileen and Larry), Aaron and Tim (Jeff and Diane), and Melissa Krall (husband Pete) and Julian (Sue and Fausto); and five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Svec (Lisa and Andrew), Madeleine and Jensen Gamm (Paul and Melissa), and Somyaag Bhadri Means (Aaron and Saraswati); sisters Mary (Richard) Newton of Waterloo and Jean (Don) Von Handorf of Colesburg; and a sister-in-Law, Mary (Francis) Cox of Waterloo.

John, "J.J." to his parents, brother and sisters) was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; parents Frank and Florence Cox; brother Francis Cox; and son-in-law Ronald Hahn.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Waterloo, followed by interment there at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family requests donations be made to Hospice or favorite charity.
