Dr. Joan E. Schreiber, professor of history, (social studies methods) at Ball State University, died Sunday, January 29, 2012, at the age of 83. Dr. Schreiber was a member of the Ball State faculty, as a professor of history and the social studies coordinator from 1966-2002. Before coming to Ball State University, she taught at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, and in the public schools of Cedar Rapids and Cass County, Iowa. She was a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Association for Student Teaching, International Reading Association and National Council for the Social Studies.

Dr. Schreiber earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Iowa State Teachers College, and her master’s degree in elementary school supervision and administration at State College of Iowa. She then earned a specialist in education degree in elementary and secondary school curriculum and supervision at the University of Northern Iowa, and a doctor of philosophy degree in social science education at the University of Iowa. At Ball State, Dr. Schreiber served on a number of university committees, ranging from traffic and safety appeals to chairing search committees for administrators. For 28 years, she was the college representative on what today is called the Teacher Preparation Committee, acting as its chair several times. After serving two terms as vice-chair, Dr. Schreiber was elected as chairperson of the University Senate, the first woman to hold that position. In 1998, she received the Outstanding Faculty Service award. Dr. Schreiber’s efforts to provide quality education for students brought professional involvement that extended beyond Ball Sate, providing her with an active role in developing new state social studies standards and licensure programs for teachers.

One of her greatest joys had been seeing many of her former students engage in these professional activities on their own.

Active in state social studies curriculum development, Dr. Schreiber was a past president of the Indiana Council for the Social Studies, and was listed in Who’s Who in the Social Studies. She was a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences, American Association of University Professors, American Association of University Women, Phi Delta Kappa, and Pi Lambda Theta.

Dr. Schreiber had a love of nature, and appreciation for the beauty of the earth and the out-of-doors, woods, plants, flowers, sunrises and sunsets, animals and birds. Dr. Schreiber valued education and learning throughout a person’s lifetime, and had a fondness for teaching and working with students. For many years, Dr. Schreiber was an active member of the SPCA of Delaware County with her good friend, Phyllis Yuhas.

Survivors include her brother Dale, of California.

Burial and graveside service will be held on March 24, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the West View Cemetery, La Porte City, Iowa.

Memorial contributions may be made to Indiana Landmarks, 1201 Central Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46202, or the Animal Welfare Institute, P.O. Box 3650 Washington, DC 20027.
