CEDAR FALLS — Dale M. Coates, 94, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, March 12, at Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Health Center.

He was born March 31, 1917, in Dubuque, son of John William and Gertrude Irene Metcalfe Coates. He married Gladys June [Ostwald] Coates Aug. 24, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. She died Nov. 3, 2010.

Mr. Coates served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He worked for Brunskill Dairy, farmed, and worked in the heating plant at UNI for 20 years.

Survived by a son, John (Linda) of Marina, Calif.; two daughters, Pam (Don) Poggensee of Ida Grove and Lonna (David) Christie of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, William (Petrina) Risso, Sabrina (Jose) Guevara, Dale Coates, Katie Boyce, Abby Mohlis, Jessica Christie and Megan Christie; and six great-grandchildren, Anthony and Portia Risso, Angel, Ernesto, Johnathan and Brilynn Guevara.

Preceded in death by a sister in infancy, Marie; and two brothers, Don and Burton.

Private family graveside services: will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
